Pre-Op Care Instructions
Preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming, but having the right information makes the process much smoother. At Back Bay Periodontics & Dental Implants, we want you to feel confident, comfortable, and ready on the day of your procedure. These pre-operative guidelines are here to help you know what to expect and how to prepare.
Before Your Appointment
A little preparation goes a long way. By following these steps, you’ll set yourself up for the safest, most comfortable experience:
- Plan your day: Arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment if you’ll be receiving sedation or anesthesia.
- Follow fasting instructions: If you’re scheduled for IV sedation or general anesthesia, do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
- Take medications as directed: We’ll let you know which prescriptions to take before your procedure. Always use a small sip of water if needed.
- Dress comfortably: Wear loose-fitting clothes with short sleeves so we can easily monitor your vitals. Avoid heavy makeup, jewelry, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
Medications and Health Conditions
Your safety is our priority. Please be sure to tell us about all medications you take, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Blood thinners, aspirin, and certain herbal products may need to be adjusted before surgery.
Also let us know about any changes in your health, such as colds, respiratory infections, or new medical conditions that arise before your appointment. Sometimes, it’s safer to reschedule until you’re fully healthy.
What to Expect the Day Of
When you arrive at our Boston office, our team will review your health history, check your vital signs, and answer any last-minute questions. You’ll have a chance to talk through your sedation or anesthesia plan so you feel completely comfortable.
If you’re receiving local anesthesia only, you’ll be able to drive yourself home. If sedation or general anesthesia is being used, your escort must be present before your procedure begins.
After Your Procedure
It helps to prepare your home in advance, so recovery feels easier once you return. Stock your fridge with soft foods such as yogurt, applesauce, soup, or smoothies. Have ice packs ready for comfort and pick up any prescriptions before your appointment so they’re waiting for you.
It’s also a good idea to arrange for a family member or friend to stay with you for the first 24 hours if you’re having sedation. That way, you’ll have support as you rest and recover.
A Few Final Reminders
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your surgery
- Don’t smoke or use tobacco products for at least 48 hours prior. Both can slow down healing
- Bring your insurance card, ID, and any required paperwork with you
- Take a deep breath—our team will take excellent care of you from start to finish
